Celebrating National Nurses Week

May 6, 2025

History of National Nurses Week

National Nurses Week is celebrated annually from May 6 to May 12, culminating on Florence Nightingale's birthday. It's a time dedicated to recognizing the invaluable contributions of nurses to healthcare, the advancement of the profession and the spirit of those who choose nursing as their calling.

The idea to first recognize clinicians with a national day of honor began in 1953 when Dorothy Sutherland, who served as part of the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, proposed a "Nurse Day" to then President Eisenhower. Although the proclamation was not made, the idea persisted.

The celebration evolved over the years, with significant milestones such as the celebration of an early Nurses Week in October 1954, on the 100th anniversary of Florence Nightingale's mission to Crimea, and the International Council of Nurses proclaiming May 12 as "International Nurse Day" in 1974.

Finally, in 1993, the ANA (American Nursing Association) designated May 6-12 as the permanent dates for National Nurses Week as we know it today. This week-long celebration is now a cornerstone of recognizing the dedication and hard work of nurses across the nation.
